Chlorinated water, stress, diet, artificial fragrances, climate, natural aging and hormonal cycles, air pollution, genetics; all these and more may contribute to dry skin. Remember: your skin is your largest organ and the interface between your inner and outer environments. Stress, whether environmental, mental, emotional, spiritual or physical, all put pressure on our overall immunological responses and health balance. For many, the first place this stress will manifest is with their skin. Your dry skin may be a barometer to your inner and outer influences. Pay attention to it. There is no such thing as “bad skin”, just skin exposed to challenging situations. Here are a few other things you can do:<\/p>\n

While we don’t make promises, many people do find comfort using our supermild bar soaps. Soothing organic oats and Aloe Vera concentrate makes our mildest bars. Most of us have combination skin at some time in our lives. You know what I mean – dry skin here and pimples or oily spots there. Makes you wonder what’s going on. Relax, combination skin is very normal and very common. Many people are oily only in their “T” zone; forehead, nose and chin; and dry elsewhere. Try our beautiful honey soap with mild stoneground cornmeal scrub. Neither harsh nor overdrying, most people can use this on face and body without irritation. When you are feeling especially dry switch to Oatmeal Lavender. When oily go to Citrus Sunrise or Morning Mint. You may find yourself using different soaps in different seasons. Other helpful hints:<\/p>\n

Avoid “bad oils” like those found in processed foods, especially fast or convenience foods. Avoid cottonseed oil and partially or fully hydrogenated oils when possible. Use cold pressed olive oil if you can. Eat less meat and more whole grains. Supplement with vitamins and chelated minerals (it can’t hurt). Wash your face (or oily parts) twice a day and wash dry areas once if feasible. Look for possible reactions to the lotions or potions you may be using. Use clay or mud treatments occasionally. Consider a cleansing fast with medical supervision.<\/p>\n

For Normal Skin<\/h2>\n

Oily skin is a source of unnecessary embarrassment and anxiety for so many. Yes! Your body is trying to tell you something. But the message may be as simple as “big hormonal changes going on here”. Let’s start with the basics: First you will need to wash the oily parts twice daily – with the appropriate product. Second, and you already know this – look long and hard at your diet (see Combination Skin page, section on “bad oils”). And third, Relax! Oily skin usually has peaks and plateaus. This too shall pass. Mint is a powerful herbal astringent to dry up oily patches. For maintenance you may want to switch to something milder like the citrus Sunrise bar. Experiment! Find out what works best for you (read the Dry Skin page, section on stress and skin). Avoid frequent use of alcohol or witch hazel directly on your skin. Consider a vegetable\/grain based diet.
